Macro Photography - Level 1

Recorded Course | 4 Hours | 3 Modules | 25 Lessons | Fee $60 (€50, £45)

About This Course

Macro photography lets us photograph details in tiny objects that we would otherwise never see. With minimal gear, and plenty of hints & tips, this course shows you how to get close, really close.

Macro photography is the technique of using specialist lenses and adapters to help magnify the tiniest of details in the world around us.

Often, a few square centimetres in area is all that is needed to end up with quite a number of interesting shots.

Macro photography requires patience and can be frustrating. All too often the ‘perfect shot’ is just a little bit out of focus or the wind makes it very difficult to get a sharp shot. But the potential rewards far outweigh the frustrations.

Macro photography is something most photographers eventually come around to experimenting. The problems come when they start trying out this special technique are many. While many Compact/Point & Shoot Cameras can focus quite closely, special lenses or adapters are usually required for SLRs. The introduction will discuss and show all the options.

Another difficult area of macro photography is the difficulty with maintaining a large depth of field. Close-up photography, buy its nature, leaves you with very little in focus, quite often only millimetres in depth. This introduction will also cover the special techniques require to keep all of a flower in focus from front to back.

Rest assured, as soon as you finish the first Module of this course, all of your photographs will begin to look much better.

What kind of student takes this course?

The ideal student for this course is looking to gently ease themselves into using some key techniques and buttons that will help them improve all of their Macro photographs. This course assumes that you have been attempting Program and Aperture Priority Modes, but not necessarily understanding why some effects work, and some do not. Our goal will be to connect the various dots you already have while showing you some simple, yet key Macro techniques.

What past experience is needed?

Most students of this course will have only been using Auto or Program Mode up to this point. You might have been testing out Aperture Priory Mode with mixed success. The course does not require any prior knowledge of cameras or computers, and does not go into advanced modes such as Manual Mode.

Recommended Equipment

To get the most out of this course your camera needs to have Aperture and Shutter Priority modes, ideally an SLR or Mirrorless camera (see here for information on the different types of camera).

The course is also suitable for Bridge Cameras and high end Compact/Point & Shoot Cameras, as long as they have Aperture Priority Mode (A or Av).

If you wish to get the most out of the Software section, you will need to have any version of Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) installed on your desktop or laptop computer..

Learn key camera techniques

To get really close, special lenses or adapters are required for SLRs and Mirrorless cameras, this course will show you the best ones for your particular camera. Close-up photography, by its nature, leaves you with very little in focus, quite often only fractions of an inch/millimetres in depth. You learn how to deal with the difficulty of maintaining a large depth of field.

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) this course covers many simple techniques that you can quickly use to enhance any macro image. We will also cover focus stacking techniques, where you take multiple images a different focus depths, which are then combined later in the computer. This is also an ideal time to try using Raw Images, as the techniques are much the same as they are for Jpegs, but the quality is usually immeasurably higher, particularly in tricky lighting conditions.

- A free 7-day trial of Photoshop can be downloaded from this link.
- A free 30-day trial of Adobe Photoshop Elements is available for download from this link.

At the end of the course, you will be able to understand and use many of the key buttons on your camera. You will also be well-prepared to take better shots in most Macro Photography situations.

First and foremost, we believe there are no stupid questions, just questions about things you do not understand. On our courses, you will never be made to feel silly for seeking answers or clarification, that is what you pay us for.

All of our courses are designed around common photography scenarios, either ones that you regularly find yourself in, or would like to find yourself in. Our teaching methodology is designed to show you how to take better pictures in every one of them. The content of all of our courses is developed to build on the previous week's tips. This approach allows you quickly and confidently to understand how to improve every photo you take.

We teach each of our courses in such a way that the knowledge you pick up can be easily spread into other areas of image taking. Photography, at its core, is about shutters, apertures, and ISO, but it is HOW you bring these together for each individual shot that matters.
