HDR Photography - Level 1

Recorded Course | 4 Hours | 3 Modules | 25 Lessons | Fee $60 (€50, £45)
HDR PHOTOGRAPHY LEVEL 1 - Beginners Course

About This Course

High-Dynamic-Range is a fascinating area of photography. With a few simple camera techniques and some understanding of the software possibilities, it is possible to get astonishing results.

In this special course you will also learn how to research and identify special locations that are likely to result in great HDR shots. You will also learn the professional photographer’s tips and techniques on how to set the camera up to ensure you get properly exposure bracketed shots, even if your camera does not have Auto Exposure Bracketing.

This course will quickly get you creating these kinds of amazing images.

What kind of student takes this course?

The ideal student for this course is looking to gently ease themselves into using some key techniques and buttons that will help them improve all of their HDR photographs. This course assumes that you have been attempting Program and Aperture Priority Modes, but not necessarily understanding why some effects work, and some do not. Our goal will be to connect the various dots you already have while showing you some simple, yet key HDR techniques.

What past experience is needed?

Most students of this course will have only been using Auto or Program Mode up to this point. You might have been testing out Aperture Priory Mode with mixed success. The course does not require any prior knowledge of cameras or computers, and does not go into advanced modes such as Manual Mode.

Recommended Equipment

To get the most out of this course your camera needs to have Aperture and Shutter Priority modes, ideally an SLR or Mirrorless camera (see here for information on the different types of camera).

The course is also suitable for Bridge Cameras and high end Compact/Point & Shoot Cameras, as long as they have Aperture Priority Mode (A or Av).

If you wish to get the most out of the Software section, you will need to have the latest version of Photomatix Pro. A free trial version of Photomatix Pro is available for download at this link).

You will also need any version of Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) installed on your desktop or laptop computer. A free 30-day trial of Adobe Photoshop Elements is available for download from this link.

Learn key camera techniques

While it is possible for software process to get away with a single photo, the ideal is a minimum of 3 images, with many experienced HDR shooters preferring 5. The reason for shooting so many shots, is that the human eye is much more sensitive than any single image. With around 20 stops of dynamic range, the eye beats the a single photograph by nearly 200%. So to approximate what the human eye sees, we need to shoot more images.

This technique can reproduce a greater dynamic range of light than is possible with standard digital imaging or photographic techniques. For this to happen, the camera needs to be forced to capture much more light than it normally can, and this is done through the use of exposure bracketing.

Learn great post processing tips in the computer

No great HDR shot is complete without a little bit of post-processing in the computer afterwards. In this unique workshop you will learn key techniques when creating and manipulating HDR files in Photomatix, including control of the excessive noise that is a feature of the HDR process. You will also learn important tips for further processing in Photoshop/Elements. Among other things, we will show you how to use Photomatix, considered to be the best software for converting to HDR. Our recommendation is to try the Pro version, with also comes with a plug-in for Lightroom.

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) this course covers many simple techniques that you can quickly use to enhance any HDR image. This is also an ideal time to try using Raw Images, as the techniques are much the same as they are for Jpegs, but the quality is usually immeasurably higher, particularly in tricky lighting conditions.

In this special course you will also learn about how to create stunning black and whites in HDR, something most users of HDR are simply not aware of.

- A free trial version of Photomatix Pro is available for download at this link).
- A free 7-day trial of Photoshop can be downloaded from this link.
- A free 30-day trial of Adobe Photoshop Elements is available for download from this link.

At the end of the course, you will be well-prepared to take better shots in most HDR Photography situations. This special HDR Photography course is designed to show you how to take great shots in every outdoor location, and does so with a completely new approach to photography training. Specific tips about locations are given, including direction as to the best kinds of locations.

All you will need to do after this great course, is get out and shoot!
