GET TO KNOW YOUR NIKON SLR - Quickstart Guide

About This Course

"User manuals are written by those who know too much, for those who know too little."

While the above statement is true, it does not give the full story. User manuals are not books, they are not meant to be read from cover to cover. And therein lies the problem; all of our photographic journeys take many twists and turns and finding what we want might mean starting on page 411 and ending on page 61!

This course still relies on the user manual that came with your camera, but it puts the pages together into a coherent order (course content here).

About the course

This course is designed to be more like the journey that those new to photography (or a particular camera) might take. Interspersed with tutorial notes of our own design, we let you know ahead of time which pages in the official user manual we will be covering each week. If you do not have one, we will send you the link for the PDF download of the Nikon D500 User Manual direct from the Nikon site.

All the main sections are covered, including P, A, S, & M Modes, Exposure & ISO, Focus and Drive Modes, Menu & Custom Settings, and more, much more. At the end, you will see your camera like never before!

This extremely hands-on course will explore the many creative ways to use your Nikon's exposure modes, focus controls, custom menu items, and flash options.

What kind of student takes this course?

This Nikon D500 Quickstart Course is aimed squarely at people who own or are currently using a Nikon D500 (it is not suitable for other Nikon models, we will offer more of those later in the year).

What past experience is needed?

Most students of this course will have only been using Auto or Program Mode up to this point. You might have been testing out Aperture or Shutter Priority Modes with mixed success. The course does not require any prior knowledge of cameras or computers.

Recommended Equipment

Simple, a Nikon D500.

At the end of the course, you will be able to understand and use many of the key buttons on your Nikon D500. You will also be well-prepared to take better shots in most situations, even in dark, tricky situations like night time and low light indoor locations.

In-depth PDF tutorial notes which are carefully worded and appropriately illustrated are an integral part of all of our courses. Lectures of all kinds tend to have an effect that lasts only a short while, particularly if notes are not supplied. We believe our handouts are the key to making your newly gained knowledge much more long-lasting.

As part of that philosophy, you will receive detailed notes covering the whole course that will aid learning while on the course, and in the weeks and months afterward.

We send the notes out for each week's class just after the previous one has finished (in other words, the notes for week 2 are sent to you immediately after week 1's class has ended. We do this so that you have something to look forward to each week, and as a way to keep the notes fresh.

For the final week, each student receives the full set of tutorial notes, over 40 pages in total.

Course structure

This length of this course is 5 weeks (dates here), and there is 1 class per week, on the same day, and at the same time. Classes last 90 minutes each, and build to 7.5 hours of total learning.

This course is delivered through Live Web Learning, where we bring a real classroom right into your home. Our state of the art TV Studio lets us interact with you in real-time. We utilize a High Def 3 camera feed to more easily show critical aspects of the essential techniques that our courses cover. This means we can quickly show you a close up of a camera button, then switch to the computer showing images that illustrate the benefit of that button.

The platform we use for our Live Webinars is from Zoom. Their free app works on all phones and tablets, as well as Apple Mac's and Windows PC's. You can download Zoom for your particular device at this link.

While you can always watch a class you miss using our recorded classes option, you are still welcome to pick up a missed week on a future course (courses run multiple times per year). This is particularly helpful in courses where photo assignments are handed out. Photo critiques are, by their nature, very personal, so it can be valuable to get that live feedback on your images.

Participants of this course are welcome to join our exclusive Facebook Group, where students new and old regularly chime in with answers to your photography issues. You will also gain access to our treasure trove of pre-recorded photography hints and tips, many of which cannot be viewed by the general public.

A signed Certificate of Completion is awarded at the end of the course.

First and foremost, we believe there are no stupid questions, just questions about things you do not understand. On our courses, you will never be made to feel silly for seeking answers or clarification, that is what you pay us for.

All of our courses are designed around common photography scenarios, either ones that you regularly find yourself in, or would like to find yourself in. Our teaching methodology is designed to show you how to take better pictures in every one of them. The content of all of our courses is developed to build on the previous week's tips. This approach allows you quickly and confidently to understand how to improve every photo you take.

We teach each of our courses in such a way that the knowledge you pick up every week can be easily spread into other areas of image taking. Photography, at its core, is about shutters, apertures, and ISO, but it is HOW you bring these together for each individual shot that matters.
