Lightroom Classic Level 1 - Beginner Level Course

A cataloger, an image processor - many photographers find that Lightroom is the only software they need. This course shows you how to get to use the Library and Develop Weeks expertly, and will even show you how to connect Photoshop and Elements.

As soon as you finish the first week of this course, all of your images will begin to look much better.

Highly effective cataloger

Lightroom can catalogue and hold 20 images or 20,000, fast! It doesn't touch your original shots, instead, it changes the metadata to show the changes you've made. When you view your library, Lightroom is actually calling up an internal library of small thumbnails rather than full-size images. The advantage here is performance: Lightroom only has to work with smaller images, which makes it faster.

This course will show you how to the best out of the Library Module and will set you up with an efficient and effective workflow method.

Non-destructive editing

The beauty of Lightroom is that it utilizes non-destructive editing, which means you can work straight on the Raw files, no need for a copy. We will show how you can use the key sliders and controls to squeeze the best out of every image.

This course also brings you through the specific techniques needed to produce professional quality photos at almost any size. The key concept of this course will be "non-destructive editing". The great advantage of non-destructive editing in Lightroom® is that you can easily change image effects or adjustments weeks or months later without having to undo all the work done. It also allows quick editing and increased flexibility. Everyone who uses Lightroom® should know these techniques because they really make Lightroom® very powerful.

What kind of student takes this course?

The Lightroom Photography Level 1 - Beginner Level Course is aimed squarely at people who are mainly or only using Auto Mode. The ideal student for this course is looking to gently ease themselves into using some key techniques and buttons that will help them improve all of their photographs.

What past experience is needed?

You will need to know how to find files on your computer, to open and save a file in another location, and to be able to download files from the likes of Dropbox and Google Drive.

Recommended Equipment

All of the techniques shown on this course apply from Lightroom 6 and Lightroom Classic. You will need to have Lightroom loaded onto your computer (laptop or desktop), and be ready to go. Please note, this course is not suitable for Lightroom CC.

At the end of the course, you will be able to understand and use many of the key techniques in Lightroom. You will also be well-prepared to improve your images in every way.

High-Resolution original source files will be supplied to each student so you can work on the same photos that are in the notes and that the tutor is working on as well. We do this because sometimes the same effect can turn out slightly differently on different kinds of images. This can be confusing for those new to image editing. We believe this approach is a significant aid to learning what are very complex programmes.

In-depth PDF tutorial notes which are carefully worded and appropriately illustrated are an integral part of all of our courses. Lectures of all kinds tend to have an effect that lasts only a short while, particularly if notes are not supplied. We believe our handouts are the key to making your newly gained knowledge much more long-lasting.

As part of that philosophy, you will receive detailed notes covering the whole course that will aid learning while on the course, and in the weeks and months afterward.

We send the notes out for each week's class just after the previous one has finished (in other words, the notes for week 2 are sent to you immediately after week 1's class has ended. We do this so that you have something to look forward to each week, and as a way to keep the notes fresh.

For the final week, each student receives the full set of tutorial notes, over 100 pages in total.

Course structure

This length of this course is 6 weeks (dates here), and there is 1 class per week, on the same day, and at the same time. Classes last 90 minutes each, and build to 9 hours of total learning.

While you can always watch a class you miss using our recorded classes option, you are still welcome to pick up a missed week on a future course (courses run multiple times per year). This is particularly helpful in courses where photo assignments are handed out. Photo critiques are, by their nature, very personal, so it can be valuable to get that live feedback on your images.

Participants of this course are welcome to join our exclusive Facebook Group, where students new and old regularly chime in with answers to your photography issues. You will also gain access to our treasure trove of pre-recorded photography hints and tips, many of which cannot be viewed by the general public.

Certificate at the end of the course
Spacer At the end of the course, you will be awarded this Certificate in
Lightroom Classic 101

A signed Certificate of Completion is awarded at the end of the course.

First and foremost, we believe there are no stupid questions, just questions about things you do not understand. On our courses, you will never be made to feel silly for seeking answers or clarification, that is what you pay us for.

All of our courses are designed around common photography scenarios, either ones that you regularly find yourself in, or would like to find yourself in. Our teaching methodology is designed to show you how to take better pictures in every one of them. The content of all of our courses is developed to build on the previous week's tips. This approach allows you quickly and confidently to understand how to improve every photo you take.

We teach each of our courses in such a way that the knowledge you pick up every week can be easily spread into other areas of image taking. Photography, at its core, is about shutters, apertures, and ISO, but it is HOW you bring these together for each individual shot that matters.
