About This Course

Get ready to start using external flash guns on your camera!

Flash has the power to take your photography to a completely different level. This course shows you how to make your on-camera flashgun achieve professional-quality results. You will never again suffer from shots that are too bright or too dark.

Yet flash photography is still one of the most misunderstood and feared areas of photography, even though it has the power to immediately take your photography to a higher quality level. As in so many areas of digital photography, the flash will do a pretty good job in most average conditions using auto settings, but it is when you start taking control of the flash, its power settings, its direction, its quality (hard or soft) that things really begin to happen. That is what this course is all about.

As soon as you finish the first week of this course, all of your photographs will begin to look much better.

Please note that this is not a studio flash course, it is solely aimed at external dedicated flash guns that sit on top of your camera.

What kind of student takes this course?

The Flash Photography Level 1 - Beginner Level Course is aimed squarely at people who have just recently purchased an external flash gun, or have been mainly or only using an external flash gun Auto Mode. The ideal student for this course is looking to gently ease themselves into using some key techniques and buttons that will help them improve the flash lighting all of their photographs.

What past experience is needed?

This course assumes that you have been mainly using Auto Mode, but have been attempting Program, Shutter Priority, and Aperture Priority Modes. It also assumes you have not necessarily been understanding why some flash effects work, and some do not. Our goal will be to connect the various dots you already have while showing you some simple, yet key techniques.

Recommended Equipment

To get the most out of this course your camera needs to have Aperture and Shutter Priority modes, ideally an SLR or Mirrorless camera (see here for information on the different types of camera).

The course is also suitable for Bridge Cameras and high end Compact/Point & Shoot Cameras, as long as they have Aperture Priority Mode (A or Av) AND an external hotshoe.

You will also need an external, dedicated flash gun that uses a version of TTL eg iTTL (Nikon), ETTL (Canon). All of the main camera brand flashguns are suitable, including ones from the likes of Metz, Sigma and Nissin.

Learn key camera & Flash techniques

Through examples of all kinds of flash photography, you will learn how to light every scene, either at night or in the daytime. You will also learn the professional photographer's tips and techniques on how to set the camera and flash up to ensure you get pin sharp shots every time.

COURSE OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, you will be able to understand and use many of the key buttons on your camera and flash. You will also be well-prepared to take better shots in most situations, even in dark, tricky situations like night time and low light indoor locations.

ASSIGNMENTS

This course sets weekly assignments, each one based on the content of that class (course content here). All images are then gently critiqued at the start of the next lesson. We even set a simple assignment for week one that you can present at the opening class, just to help get you started.

PHOTO CRITIQUES

Probably the most valuable thing while learning photography is to receive gentle and supportive critiquing of your images. Our critiquing covers composition, processing tips, prompts for what works well, and suggestions for resolving things that do not.

It is also incredibly helpful to be able to see what others have done with the same assignment that you received. We can also learn to see through the eyes of others.

This course provides both of these learning supports.

ILLUSTRATED PDF TUTORIAL NOTES

In-depth PDF tutorial notes which are carefully worded and appropriately illustrated are an integral part of all of our courses. Lectures of all kinds tend to have an effect that lasts only a short while, particularly if notes are not supplied. We believe our handouts are the key to making your newly gained knowledge much more long-lasting.

As part of that philosophy, you will receive detailed notes covering the whole course that will aid learning while on the course, and in the weeks and months afterward.

We send the notes out for each week's class just after the previous one has finished (in other words, the notes for week 2 are sent to you immediately after week 1's class has ended. We do this so that you have something to look forward to each week, and as a way to keep the notes fresh.

For the final week, each student receives the full set of tutorial notes, over 30 pages in total.

Course structure

This length of this course is 3 weeks (dates here), and there is 1 class per week, on the same day, and at the same time. Classes last 90 minutes each, and build to 4.5 hours of total learning.

RETAKE A CLASS

While you can always watch a class you miss using our recorded classes option, you are still welcome to pick up a missed week on a future course (courses run multiple times per year). This is particularly helpful in courses where photo assignments are handed out. Photo critiques are, by their nature, very personal, so it can be valuable to get that live feedback on your images.

FREE TIPS FOREVER

Participants of this course are welcome to join our exclusive Facebook Group, where students new and old regularly chime in with answers to your photography issues. You will also gain access to our treasure trove of pre-recorded photography hints and tips, many of which cannot be viewed by the general public.

A note ABOUT OUR TEACHING METHODS

First and foremost, we believe there are no stupid questions, just questions about things you do not understand. On our courses, you will never be made to feel silly for seeking answers or clarification, that is what you pay us for.

All of our courses are designed around common photography scenarios, either ones that you regularly find yourself in, or would like to find yourself in. Our teaching methodology is designed to show you how to take better pictures in every one of them. The content of all of our courses is developed to build on the previous week's tips. This approach allows you quickly and confidently to understand how to improve every photo you take.

We teach each of our courses in such a way that the knowledge you pick up every week can be easily spread into other areas of image taking. Photography, at its core, is about shutters, apertures, and ISO, but it is HOW you bring these together for each individual shot that matters.
