About This Course

This course is aimed at learners looking to try different photography disciplines. No previous camera experience is required, and much of the course can be taken using Program Mode. By the end, you will be using Aperture Priority in a very creative way.

The beauty of this course is that you do not need a wide range of skills to get great results, you can be a complete beginner or someone with more photography experience. Each Week prepares you for that particular photography discipline by only discussing the camera techniques needed for that specific topic.

At the end of the course, you will have an in-depth understanding of how the creative process works and how to put it into effect in all your photos. You will also be able to accelerate your learning in photography by test out all these great photography disciplines to see which ones suit you.

Six Different Photography Disciplines

Six completely separate photography topics are the exciting bedrock of this course. These range from Macro to Landscape, HDR to Dusk, Painting With Light At Night to Street Photography.

What kind of student takes this course?

This course is aimed at those who really want to push the limits of their photography, and do so very quickly.

The ideal student for this course is looking to gently ease themselves into using some key techniques and buttons that will help them improve all of their outdoor photographs. This course assumes that you have been attempting Program and Aperture Priority Modes, but not necessarily understanding why some effects work, and some do not. Our goal will be to connect the dots by showing you some simple, yet key techniques.

What past experience is needed?

Most students of this course will have only been using Auto or Program Mode up to this point. You might have been testing out Aperture Priority Mode with mixed success. The course does not require any prior knowledge of cameras or computers, and does not go into advanced modes such as Manual Mode.

Recommended Equipment

To get the most out of this course your camera needs to have Aperture and Shutter Priority modes, ideally an SLR or Mirrorless camera (see here for information on the different types of camera).

The course is also suitable for Bridge Cameras and high end Compact/Point & Shoot Cameras, as long as they have Aperture Priority Mode (A or Av).

Learn key camera techniques

You will learn what are the best camera settings and techniques for each of the 6 photography disciplines that this course covers.

COURSE OUTCOMES

At the end of this course, all participants will have a very good understanding of how Program, Aperture, and Shutter Priority Modes function. They will also have developed their creative side and will have a clearer idea of the kinds of images they want to shoot.

All you will need to do after this great course, is get out and shoot!

ASSIGNMENTS

This course sets weekly assignments, each one based on the content of that class (course content here). All images are then gently critiqued at the start of the next lesson. We even set a simple assignment for week one that you can present at the opening class, just to help get you started.

PHOTO CRITIQUES

Probably the most valuable thing while learning photography is to receive gentle and supportive critiquing of your images. Our critiquing covers composition, processing tips, prompts for what works well, and suggestions for resolving things that do not.

It is also incredibly helpful to be able to see what others have done with the same assignment that you received. We can also learn to see through the eyes of others.

This course provides both of these learning supports.

ILLUSTRATED PDF TUTORIAL NOTES

In-depth PDF tutorial notes which are carefully worded and appropriately illustrated are an integral part of all of our courses. Lectures of all kinds tend to have an effect that lasts only a short while, particularly if notes are not supplied. We believe our handouts are the key to making your newly gained knowledge much more long-lasting.

As part of that philosophy, you will receive detailed notes covering the whole course that will aid learning while on the course, and in the weeks and months afterward.

We send the notes out for each week's class just after the previous one has finished (in other words, the notes for week 2 are sent to you immediately after week 1's class has ended. We do this so that you have something to look forward to each week, and as a way to keep the notes fresh.

For the final week, each student receives the full set of tutorial notes, over 100 pages in total.

Course structure

This length of this course is 7 weeks (dates here), and there is 1 class per week, on the same day, and at the same time. Classes last 90 minutes each, and build to 10.5 hours of total learning.

A note ABOUT OUR TEACHING METHODS

First and foremost, we believe there are no stupid questions, just questions about things you do not understand. On our courses, you will never be made to feel silly for seeking answers or clarification, that is what you pay us for.

All of our courses are designed around common photography scenarios, either ones that you regularly find yourself in, or would like to find yourself in. Our teaching methodology is designed to show you how to take better pictures in every one of them. The content of all of our courses is developed to build on the previous week's tips. This approach allows you quickly and confidently to understand how to improve every photo you take.

We teach each of our courses in such a way that the knowledge you pick up every week can be easily spread into other areas of image taking. Photography, at its core, is about shutters, apertures, and ISO, but it is HOW you bring these together for each individual shot that matters.
